What is Intensive Alternative

Family Treatment (IAFT)?

Intensive Alternative Family Treatment® (IAFT) uses highly trained treatment parents through Alexander Youth Network. This evidence-based approach supports a child’s success within his family and community. IAFT is a family-based option for children stepping down from restrictive care and offers more choice than most out-of-home placements. IAFT empowers children ready to reengage with their communities.

IAFT treatment parents receive round-the-clock support, supervision and clinical oversight, empowering them to manage difficult behaviors, keeping kids out of emergency care and intensive programs like residential and in-patient treatment.

Candidates for IAFT must be between 7 and 18 years of age and have a primary mental health diagnosis. These children may have exhibited verbal and physical aggression, oppositional or defiant behavior, suicidal ideation, PTSD symptoms and/or attachment difficulties. These children are typically at-risk for a higher level of out-of-home care or are stepping down from a higher level of care.

Alexander, along with its Rapid Resource for Families partners, is using this approach to offer more options for kids to receive treatment in their communities which yields better outcomes.
